An all-white bedding set in which the check pattern is created entirely within the weave - no dye, no print, no colour contrast. An optical check (also called a self-check or damask check) uses alternating sections of sateen and plain weave at right angles to produce a pattern visible only through the way different weave structures reflect light differently. The result is a tonal, tone-on-white geometric grid that is subtle in daylight and more defined under directional light. It is the only patterned design in the Cottsbury bedding range that introduces visual texture without any added colour. Closure is concealed coconut shell buttons - no plastic, no metal.

Frequently Asked Questions

An optical check (also called a self-check, damask check, or woven check) is a pattern created purely within the fabric weave - no dye, no print, no embroidery. The loom alternates between two weave structures - typically sateen and plain weave - arranged in a regular grid. Because sateen reflects more light than plain weave, the different sections catch light at slightly different angles, making the check pattern visible as a tonal effect in the fabric. The pattern is permanent and structural - it cannot fade, wash out, or transfer, because no pigment was ever added.
The optical check is a subtle design. In flat, diffuse light - typical of an indoor bedroom - it reads as a faint geometric texture across the fabric. Under directional or raking light (morning sunlight through a window, bedside lamp at an angle), the contrast between weave sections becomes more pronounced. It is not a bold graphic pattern but a refined textural detail, visible only when you look closely or when light conditions favour it.
The optical check occupies a specific position in the white bedding category: it has more visual interest than a plain white sateen set, without introducing any colour. It suits people who want a tonal pattern rather than contrast, who want white bedding that is slightly more distinctive than a solid, or who are working with a bedroom scheme where colour contrast would be too strong. It is also a practical advantage that the pattern is permanent - unlike printed designs, it will not fade unevenly over time.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is the leading international certification for organic textiles. It covers the full supply chain from field to finished product. For this set - which is undyed and unprinted - GOTS certification applies primarily to the cotton growing conditions (no synthetic pesticides or fertilisers), the yarn processing, and the manufacturing environment. There are no dye inputs to certify, which makes this one of the most chemically minimal options in the Cottsbury bedding range.
Yes. The 300 thread count sateen weave produces a smooth, low-friction surface. Because the set is undyed and unprinted, there are no synthetic dye residues on the fabric - making it a strong choice for people with contact dermatitis or dye sensitivities. The only other comparable option in the Cottsbury range is the White Classic Bedding Set, which is a plain sateen without the woven check pattern.
