Melange is produced by blending dyed and undyed (or differently dyed) fibres together before the yarn is spun, rather than dyeing finished fabric. The result is a flecked, heathered tone where individual fibres of slightly different colours are visible up close. Compared to a solid dyed grey, melange looks more textured and less uniform - closer to the appearance of a well-worn sweatshirt than a flat, colour-blocked fabric. It also tends to require less dye overall, since a portion of the fibre blend remains undyed.
Jersey is a knit construction - the same type of fabric used in T-shirts and organic cotton loungewear. It has a natural stretch, a matte finish, and softness from first use. Sateen is a woven construction with a smoother, slightly sheeny surface and a crisper feel that softens gradually with washing. Jersey bedding tends to feel warmer and more enveloping; sateen is cooler and more structured. Jersey suits people who prefer a relaxed, wrapped feel over crisp hotel-style sheets.
Yes, with the caveat that the dyed portion of the melange blend uses GOTS-approved colorants. GOTS prohibits the most common contact sensitisers found in commercial textile dyes - azo compounds and heavy metal-based pigments. The jersey construction provides a soft, low-friction surface. For people with documented reactions to textile dyes of any kind, the undyed Natural Classic or White Classic sateen sets are the more cautious option.
Jersey's knit structure traps more air than woven fabrics, giving it slightly more insulating properties. It works well through autumn and winter and in cooler bedrooms year-round. For hot sleepers or warmer climates, the Cottsbury Classic Sateen sets are a lighter-weight alternative.
Cottsbury fitted sheets and duvet covers are sized to standard UK dimensions. The fitted sheet has a 30 cm depth, which fits most standard mattresses. If your mattress is deeper than 30 cm (common with pillow-top and memory foam), measure before ordering. The King duvet cover (230 × 220 cm) fits a standard UK king duvet without overhang.
